Powder for administration in drinking water with lincomycin and spectinomycin. For treatment and metaphylaxis of porcine proliferative enteropathy (ileitis) caused by Lawsoniaintracellularis and associated enteric pathogens (Escherichia coli) sensitive to lincomycin and spectinomycin.
Lincomycin is a broad spectrum lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. It is mainly bacteriostatic, but can be bactericidal at higher concentrations. It is active against Gram-positive bacteria, Mycoplasma spp. and some anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria like Lawsonia intracellularis, which causes porcine ileitis.
In pigs, lincomycin is absorbed quickly when administered orally and fully eliminated within 24 hours of the final dose, as long as administered at the recommended doses.
What is spectinomycin?
Spectinomycin is an aminocyclitol antibiotic, closely related to the aminoglycosides, that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. It is bacteriostatic and active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, like E. coli, as well as Mycoplasma spp.
Synergistic interaction of lincomycin and spectinomycin
Combining lincomycin and spectinomycin generates a broad spectrum synergistic pharmacological effect against numerous intestinal infections in pigs.
The combination of lincomycin and spectinomycin in 1:1 and 1:2 proportions is highly effective for treatment and metaphylaxis of porcine proliferative enteropathy when it is caused by Lawsonia intracellularis and associated enteric pathogens (E. coli).
Although both antibiotics are mainly bacteriostatic, in high concentrations they can be bactericidal against microorganisms, controlling clinical problems and improving daily weight gain. At the same time, they help control respiratory and digestive issues caused by germs sensitive to both components, like enzootic pneumonia and pre-weaning colibacillosis.
Studies suggest that treating pigs with lincomycin and spectinomycin brings about an improvement in their clinical symptoms, including improved fecal consistency and weight gain, as well as stopping shedding of L. intracellularis. Plus, the combination of lincomycin and spectinomycin broadens the spectrum of target bacterial pathogens.

Responsible use of antibiotics
Veterinary medications, including antibiotics, play a key role in managing animal health. Farmers, veterinarians and anyone involved in animal care have the responsibility to look out for their health and wellbeing, which requires access to the right tools to do so. We must promote responsible use of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections in livestock and pets. Responsible use means administering precise doses for the period indicated, only when necessary and always with a prescription from a veterinarian.
Proper management of veterinary drugs is part of a comprehensive approach geared towards minimizing diseases, which includes measures like: farm biosecurity, proper facilities, optimal hygiene, balanced nutrition, regular monitoring of animal health and wellbeing, including vaccination when necessary, and a comprehensive healthcare plan.
